TMHA Apprentice Owen Pattie Shines for Canberra Raiders

18 year old Owen Pattie, who was this week named NSW Rugby League Jersey Flegg Player of the Year, commenced his apprenticeship at TMHA’s Queanbeyan branch in 2023 after relocating to Canberra to play for the Raiders in the NSW Cup and Jersey Flegg sides.

The apprenticeship opportunity emerged through TMHA’s principal sponsorship of the Canberra Raiders.

TMHA President Steve Takacs says he has always believed that sponsorships are stronger when you work together as partners and this is a good example of that in action.

“Great sponsorships go further than just the logo on the jersey – they become genuine partnerships where you are always looking for opportunities to strengthen the relationship and add greater value.”

“When we found out that Owen was interested in gaining trade qualifications, we jumped at the chance to introduce him to the TMHA apprenticeship program and he hasn’t looked back.”

Owen has balanced his football commitments and his apprenticeship with the support of TMHA and says he is grateful for the opportunity to build a trade skill and gain qualifications that will stay with him beyond his football career.

“Moving to Canberra was daunting but I’ve found two second homes – one with the Raiders and one at TMHA”

“My mentor and the team at the Queanbeyan branch have been really supportive and I’ve enjoyed the opportunity to learn from them and work towards becoming a forklift technician”

“With the support of TMHA, I’ve been able to work on two goals by continuing to develop my football career while also building skills and a qualification that will stay with me for life.”
